Welcome to "Working With COLOUR", the area of DESIGN WORKS! dedicated to helping our clients understand the relationship of "colour" to HTML programming, web site design and imagery. By now we have either completed your Strategic Internet Business Plan or are at the "Design Considerations" planning point. The following charts identify the standard colours supported by the Windows VGA palette or the Netscape palette. These colours can be utilized for both background and copy colour.
The 16 colours specified by name are standard colours supported in the Windows VGA palette. The 216 colours specified by RGB codes represent the Netscape palette. While specialized colours can be added, we recommend the use of standard colours in order to ensure as consistent a presentation as possible for all web site viewers.
We believe that it is useful for you to review these colours using your own monitor in order to appreciate how the colours you choose will appear to your web site visitors. If you are trying to match corporate, brand or other specific colours for use on your web site, you can compare the appropriate colour swatch to the specific colours presented below.
PRODUCTION NOTE: The effectiveness of your web site is directly influenced by the ability of your viewers to read and appreciate what appears on their monitor screens. As you know by now, our philosophy is to ADD VALUE THROUGH RELEVANT, MEANINGFUL CONTENT. We believe from the design point of view that the combination of background and copy colours should be pleasing to the eye and represent a level of contrast that is easy to read without eye strain. GENERATING COLOURS IN HTML
The colour samples in the tables below are not images; they are generated by the HTML of this page.
Colors can be produced for a number of page elements using the colour names or RGB codes indicated in each of the samples.
For comparison, the background of this page is "white".

NAMED COLOURS
These 16 colours can be specified by name; they represent the standard colors supported in the Windows VGA palette.

RGB HEXADECIMAL CODED COLOURS
Colours may also be specified by six-character codes representing their relative red/green/blue (RGB) values, where the possible values for each color component are 00, 33, 66, 99, cc, and ff
The six charts below display the 216 possible colors in the Netscape palette with their hexadecimal RGB codes (a seventh chart displays the gray scale from black to white). In each chart the blue value is constant, the vertical axis represents increasing red values, and the horizontal axis represents increasing green values.
The six charts can be visualized as a cube composed of 216 cubelets; the total cube has six layers of thirty-six cubelets; each cubelet represents a unique colour. Using this metaphor, black (000000) in the lower left of the first chart is one corner of the cube and white (ffffff) in the upper right of the last chart is the opposite corner of the cube.
